Perceptions of dual identity
Exploring Identity Through Art: A Four-Part Workshop Series
This four-part art program invited Latin American youth in Canada to reflect on culture, identity, and the emotional journey of migration through creative expression.
Participants explored dual identity, cultural memory, and personal values through activities like the Personal Identity Wheel, meditative exercises, and guided readings, translating their experiences into paintings, abstract works, and written stories. In a powerful creative process, participants even wrote parts of their personal stories on their skin, visually expressing the values most important to them. Honest conversations about belonging, cultural loss, and self-discovery unfolded alongside the artmaking.
The program culminated in a final session where participants reflected on these values through art. Their artworks and portraits, captured by photographer Julie Bénard, were proudly exhibited at Britannia Art Gallery, celebrating connection, reflection, and creative growth.
